Jasta 11’s Albatros D.III fighters lined up at Douai Airfield in April 1917. Jasta 11 was the top German fighter squadron in April 1917, with 89 confirmed victories. (AC)

Boelcke recommended that fighters initiate attacks in flights of between four and six aircraft. As soon as combat was joined, however, each attacking fighter pilot was to single out one enemy aircraft for destruction. Boelcke recommended against two aircraft ganging up on one, since the close manoeuvring space of the era led to a high risk of mid-air collision. These tactics were based on the reality of aerial combat. Two different airplanes moving at 90–120mph and manoeuvring made it difficult to hit a moving target, so achieving surprise became key.
